Ms Jin Loh Combines ABRSM Music Theory Teachings with New Music Technology in Her Online Music Theory Lessons

Ms Jin Loh’s online music theory lessons are unique and effective.

Ms Jin Loh's online music theory lessons stand out for their unique and effective approach. She believes that it is crucial for students to truly listen to the music excerpts and scores as presented in music theory books during their learning process.

By hearing the music demonstrated or played, students can enhance their understanding of music. Instead of solely teaching music theory by reading from books or analyzing scores theoretically on paper, Ms Jin Loh goes the extra mile to create music excerpts and scores that are played by various musical instruments for her theory students to listen to.

This additional effort helps her students gain a deeper understanding and a greater appreciation for music. Tailoring the music excerpts to specific instruments like harpsichord, piano, oboe, or cello, Ms Jin Loh ensures that her students can listen to the music after her explanations. For instance, when teaching grade 6/7/8 theory topics such as Trio Sonata or Figured Bass, Ms Jin Loh uses the Harpsichord to play the ABRSM Theory Book's Trio Sonata excerpts for her students to hear.

As Bach's Baroque compositions were intended for the Harpsichord and not the modern piano, students benefit from listening to the music played on the authentic instrument rather than a substitute like the piano, whenever possible.
