Student Vocal Performance Video When I Look at You (WEBP)

🌿 A Moment of True Musical Storytelling

Why Ms Jin Loh Selected This Performance Video — A Special Memory from Her Student, Celine See

Before the pandemic, Ms Jin Loh’s students still attended lessons in her studio for in-person classes. This particular video was recorded during one of those simple, quiet evening — long before Ms Jin Loh’s student, Celine See, became a CEO (Country Manager).

At that time, Celine had only been studying with Ms Jin Loh for about 2 years. Today, Celine See has been under Ms Jin Loh's guidance for nearly 9 years.

They were preparing for Celine’s singing examination, and one of her exam pieces was “When I Look at You” from The Scarlet Pimpernel musical. To help her connect more deeply with the song, Ms Jin Loh shared with Celine the background of the musical, the emotional world behind the lyrics, and the quiet heartbreak within the character’s story.

Before knowing the story, Celine sang the piece “well.”

After understanding it, she sang with truth.

🌿 The Story Behind the Song

In the musical, the heroine stands before her husband’s portrait, searching his painted face for the man she once knew:

“You were once that someone…”
“Why did you smile his smile?”

She feels him becoming a stranger. She wonders why he has changed, and whether she has already lost the person she loved. What she does not know is that her husband has never changed. He lives a secret double life to protect others — a burden he cannot reveal, not even to her.

The emotional distance she feels is born from misunderstanding, not absence of love.

This quiet sorrow, the unspoken longing, and the loneliness of two hearts drifting apart —
that is the soul of the song.

When Ms Jin Loh explained this to Celine, something shifted.

Celine began singing not only the melody, but the character’s heart.

🌿 A Simple Recording, A Sincere Performance

The video was recorded with nothing more than an iPhone —
no external studio microphones, no costumes.

Just Celine standing in Ms Jin Loh’s studio, singing from her heart, and Ms Jin Loh accompanying her on the piano.

It was an ordinary rehearsal, yet one of the most emotionally honest performances Ms Jin Loh has witnessed from Celine.

🌿 The Examination Day: A Quiet, Shared Moment

On the day of Celine’s exam, Ms Jin Loh entered the examination room with her as the piano accompanist. When Celine sang this piece, her voice carried the full emotional landscape of the story — its longing, confusion, tenderness, and silent ache.

After the exam, Celine told Ms Jin Loh that her tears had almost fallen while she was singing this song.

Celine's voice carried so much tenderness that the emotion rose right to the edge of her eyes. Ms Jin Loh smiled and told Celine jokingly, ‘If the examiner had seen your tears fall, you might have scored high distinction…’

And truthfully, Ms Jin Loh felt the same — the emotion in Celine’s singing rose so strong that tears gathered in her own eyes as she played the piano. But she held them back, quietly, because a piano accompanist wiping tears during an exam would certainly create a scene the examiner did not expect.

Despite Celine’s technique at that early stage not being as more polished as it is today, her interpretation was sincere and deeply felt. In the world of singing, a heartfelt performance often reaches listeners more deeply than flawless technique alone.

Many years have passed, yet this recording remains one of Ms Jin Loh’s favourites.

It captures something rare: a young singer entering the character completely, singing with honesty, vulnerability, and emotional truth.

This is why Ms Jin Loh chose to share this performance video.

It embodies what she values most in vocal training —
not only technique, but the ability to understand a story, feel its emotions, and bring those feelings to life through song.

A singer who sings with heart can move an audience more profoundly than one who sings only with flawless technique.

And that is the beauty of this performance.
